For many mums and dads (or those with a child on the way) lockdown has made them realise that they need a new home - one where everyone can have a room of their own and where there is room for the family to grow. Dundas specialise in homes for growing families - for example, our Fullarton style has a self-contained second floor: perfect for the independent teenager in your life!

One of the great things about moving home is that you can create a room that your kids will love (and have fun designing it with them if they’re old enough). To get you thinking, we’ve put together some ideas for how you can make the perfect room for your child - whether they’ve just arrived or are almost fully grown.

The perfect nursery

A child’s first room is a really special project to plan. You should obviously think safety first - for example look out for any sharp edges that need covering. It’s also wise to invest in the essentials, such as a good cot. But beyond that let your imagination sore. Why not go DIY with a lovely restful colour scheme and home-made bunting, decorations and pictures?

A den for play

As your baby becomes a toddler, you can make their room a super space for play by bringing in bean bags and cushions, adding display boards for their art and, perhaps, some blackboard paint on a bit of wall, so that they can get creative with chalk. Why not get creative yourself by adding a mural or some fun curtains or blinds?

Growing up

When your kids hit the early teenage years, they’ll want to have friends over for sleepovers, so you might want to look into bunks or a pull-out bed. At this age, good storage is vital and they’ll also need somewhere to do their school work. One option is to repurpose an old table as a desk by giving it a lick of paint. Tap into your kid’s play ideas - why not build a canopy over their bed so that it looks like a castle or treehouse?

A space for teens

Teenagers have strong opinions so why not work up a mood board with them as a way of coming to a decorating solution you’re both happy with? You don’t have to think too big - hanging lights and cool rugs can turn a normal room into something special. Let them use the life hacks they see on-line to make their bedroom their own - for example, use old skateboards as shelves, or pallets as headboards.
